Stewardship of Resources
Project Management
Bible Verse 📖
Proverbs 27:23-24 states, "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations."
This verse highlights the importance of being diligent in managing one's resources, whether they be in the form of flocks of sheep or a more modern interpretation, one's financial resources. It also reminds us that wealth and status are not permanent and that they should not be our ultimate goal in life. Instead, we should focus on being good stewards of the resources we have been given and using them responsibly.
My new role gives me stewardship over financial and human resources, and my goal is to maximize the output with as little investment as possible.
New Project Manager Role
As I’ve been wanting to travel less and train more, I’ve been communicating that with my boss and several executives in my small company. Last week that dream became a reality. I’m now a project manager! I’ve had quite the journey at my company, being promoted six times in five and a half years, and half the jobs they created because of my skillsets. From working the frontline, managing the frontline workers, to marketing, training, and operations, I feel like I have a firm grasp on what my company looks like holistically. Now, being a project manager, I have a greater influence in my company.
I came across a Jocko Willink podcast several years ago that really had an impact on me. He talked about what to do when you don’t like how your superiors are running the show. Quit, or stick around long enough, and perform well enough, to take their job. And this can be replicated at every level. Although I don’t want my boss’s boss’s job, I get the point. I now have a strategic role and can influence the way my company operates, and I’m really enjoying it.
I’ve started using ClickUp as an actual project manager, and it feels amazing setting up my new space. I’ve created a backlog and a list for every project I have with an automated progress bar. I’m excited to increase the visibility of the work that is being completed, not to mention everything that has to be done. There is a lot assigned for the year, and I think it can all be done if we organize and manage it well.
I’ll be creating project charters for the larger projects on the list, but for the smaller ones, we’ll manage them informally. I’m anxious to learn to what degree each size project needs formality, and how much.
Meaningful Song 🎧
Managing resources is important, but one thing I've realized is that putting in effort to keep key relationships strong is just as valuable, if not more, than managing financial resources.
Story 📚
One Bible story about stewardship is the Parable of the Talents found in Matthew 25:14-30. In the story, a master entrusts three servants with talents (currency) before going on a journey. The first servant receives five talents, the second receives two talents, and the third receives one talent. When the master returns, the first two servants have doubled their talents, but the third servant, fearing the master's wrath, buried his talent and did not invest it. The master commends the first two servants for being good stewards and using their talents wisely, but he punishes the third servant for not being a good steward. The moral of the story is that we are all entrusted with gifts and resources from God, and we will be held accountable for how we use and manage them.
Have a fantastic week, and be mindful of your stewardships,
