Building My Second Brain
+ Apps I Use
Bible Verse đź“–
Proverbs 4:25-27
“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.”
Last week I wrote about retrospectives. This week I’m looking ahead and planning my year with God in mind. I’m trying to focus more on things that matter and get rid of the distractions and clutter in my life.
Building My Second Brain
Keeping track of my learning process has been a valuable tool in helping me stay motivated and on track. Documenting things I’ve learned has provided me with an opportunity to measure progress, identify trends and successes, and look back at areas in my life for improvement and growth. This process of reflection and documentation can be a powerful way to further learning and development.
I use several applications to track my progress for the projects I take on. I use ClickUp for tracking my work projects, Reminders for my personal task management, Apple Notes for taking notes, Notion for journaling, and miscellaneous spreadsheets in Google Drive. As I mentioned above, I want to get rid of clutter and distractions in order to focus on the things that really matter. I am planning on migrating from Apple Notes for my note-taking into Notion and moving forward with that. That’s a time-consuming project because I have several hundred notes and 30+ folders. Here are links to the software I mentioned. I’m on a desktop so I’m linking to websites, but you can also search the app store:
I’m having a much easier time this year than last year since I have tons of notes on what I want to do and how I want to get there. It’s almost as if I have a running New Year Resolution list that I keep checking off. I have a future log of projects to work on and thoughts around the resources I need to accomplish them. My second brain is working!!! My book recommendation relates to this thought, it’s what a second brain is and how to build one. There are plenty of YouTubers who have videos on the same idea. Just type “building a second brain” into the search bar and get started anywhere.

Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte
I would say this is the most impactful book I read in 2022, and it just came out in June. Tiago describes how to capture information, how to decide which information to save, how to save it for quick retrieval, and how to create new projects/documents/etc. based on your existing library of information.
Tiago also has a newsletter and a YouTube channel where he dives deep into which note-taking or task-management apps and software to use for the different types of thinkers. I 100% recommend his content and will be reading the book again.
